Cardiology, Cardiac Electrophysiology tele-advice available on Specialist LINK

January 17, 2020

CALGARY – Cardiology and Cardiac Electrophysiology non-urgent tele-advice service are now available to family physicians in the Calgary area via Specialist LINK.

Cardiology and Electrophysiology are the first groups added in 2020 as part of the fast-growing initiative, which connects specialists with family doctors in real time. Requesting tele-advice is simple; doctors or their team members can visit and click on the relevant button (in this case Cardiology or Cardiac Electrophysiology), or call 403.910.2551 (and press 7-1 or 7-2, respectively). Physicians can expect to receive a call-back within one hour.

Cardiology tele-advice supports general questions related to this area. There are separate tele-advice lines available for Congestive Heart Failure and Cardiac Electrophysiology. Physicians in the Calgary area also have the option of submitting an eReferral Advice Request via Netcare for Cardiology.

Some other guidelines regarding Cardiology tele-advice are as follows:

  • Please contact the primary cardiologist, if there is one, prior to using Specialist LINK
  • If the primary cardiologist is not available and/or the physician cannot wait, proceed with the request for tele-advice
  • Hypertension enquiries should be directed to General Internal Medicine
  • Urgent questions should be directed to RAAPID, as appropriate
  • Post-operative enquiries should be forwarded to the patient’s surgeon
  • For Congenital Cardiology, please contact the Southern Alberta Adult Congenital Heart Clinic at the Peter Lougheed Centre (403.943.4504).

Requests for Cardiac Electrophysiology tele-advice should focus on managing patients with arrhythmias (bradycardia and tachycardia) and those with syncope. Questions regarding patients with preexisting pacemakers or defibrillators should be directed to the Foothills Medical Centre device clinic at 403.944.1188

Physicians who choose to request tele-advice service by phone can click here to view the phone tree, which acts a quick reference guide to the services available and how to access them. The physician (or team member) requesting advice – either online or by phone – should always leave a direct line or cellphone for the physician seeking a call. The physician should also have the patient’s personal health number at hand.
