Orthopaedic access pathway, advice available
September 17, 2020
CALGARY (Thursday, September 17, 2020) – An orthopaedics access pathway is now available to support family physicians in the Calgary area to choose the best referral and advice options for their patients.
Posted at specialistlink.ca, the access pathway clarifies the elective, urgent and emergent choices available locally, as well as how to access tele-advice via Specialist LINK. A list of referral resources is included.
Orthopaedics tele-advice is the most popular of the 50 services available via Specialist LINK but some of the calls being received aren’t always appropriate for real-time advice.
“Many are about acute fractures and these should be directed to the orthopaedic surgeons on call at the sites through the Regional On Call Application (ROCA) as they often require a cast clinic follow up,” said Dr. Jason Werle, Clinical Professor and Head of the Section of Orthopaedic Surgery. “This includes all fractures within eight weeks of injury.
“The access pathway is designed to help family physicians get the appropriate care for their patients as quickly and efficiently as possible. We hope physicians find it useful.”
Requesting orthopaedics surgery tele-advice is simple – doctors can visit specialistlink.ca during business hours and click on the orthopaedics button. Alternatively, physicians can call 403-910-2551 and press 4-6 to request tele-advice. The service is available from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. from Monday to Friday (except statutory holidays); physicians can expect to receive a call-back within one hour.
