Family physicians can refer patients for rTMS outpatient treatment

November 13, 2019

CALGARY –– Family doctors in the Calgary area can now refer patients with treatment-resistant depression for Repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (rTMS).

rTMS, a non-invasive procedure that uses a magnetic pulse to stimulate areas of the brain, is being offered at outpatient clinics at Rockyview General Hospital and Foothills Medical Centre. Referrals were previously only accepted from psychiatrists.

To make a referral, physicians should complete the referral form, in full, and fax it to Access Mental Health at 403-943-9044. Referrals made without the form or by phone will not be accepted. Following receipt of a referral, Access Mental Health will send a disposition letter to the referring physician outlining next steps. If the referral is deemed inappropriate, referring physicians will be notified in writing and encouraged to call Access Mental Health (403-943-1500) to explore other treatment options.

Patients who are accepted for treatment need to attend 30 daily sessions over the course of six weeks. See the clinic details form for referral criteria. All rTMS resources, including the referral form, can be downloaded from the Specialist LINK physician resources page.
