New Enhanced Endocrinology Referral Pathway helps streamline process for doctors
May 1, 2017
Specialist LINK connects family doctors and specialists through a real-time telephone advice line that improves collaboration, efficiency and enhances the coordination of patient care delivery.
Endocrinology joined the service in October, 2016 and has already received over 220 calls alone from family doctors seeking additional advice at the point of potential referral.
A new enhanced referral pathway has been developed by the Division of Endocrinology in conjunction with the Health Systems Support zone committee comprised of Primary Care Networks, specialist divisions and Alberta Health Services. The pathway helps physicians navigate the referral process and clearly outlines how the Specialist LINK service interfaces in the process.
Currently, the specialist partnerships have grown to include Endocrinology, Gastroenterology, Hepatology, Neurology, Pediatrics, Respirology and Rheumatology specialists and HSS is in discussion with several other groups. To date, over 1,600 advice calls have been made to specialists by family doctors.
“Specialist LINK is part of an initiative to strengthen and improve relationships between primary care and specialty care in order to better coordinate and improve care for our patients,” says Dr. Linda Slocombe, committee chair for HSS.
