Psychiatry joins Specialist LINK

March 19, 2018

Vascular surgery, congestive heart failure also set to be added to tele-advice line

Psychiatry has become the latest addition to the fast-growing Specialist LINK advice line. Physicians in the Calgary area can now get real-time, non-urgent telephone advice related to the specialty by calling 403-910-2551 during business hours, from Monday to Friday.

Physicians looking for a quick answer – calls are returned within an hour – and those seeking non-urgent clinical advice on therapeutics, management or diagnostics, as well as standards of care and practice guidelines, are invited to call the service.

The psychiatry line is not suitable for physicians seeking information about resources, or those who have patients who require face-to-face consultation. Those enquiries should continue to be directed to Access Mental Health at 403-943-1500 (the rural intake line is available at 1-877-652-4700).

“Psychiatry is a much-anticipated addition to Specialist LINK,” said Dr. Linda Slocombe, chair of the Health Systems Support group that developed the tele-advice line. “This service will provide further support to medical homes seeking to manage ongoing mental health needs of their patients.”

Psychiatry is the 11th specialty group to join Specialist LINK. Congestive heart failure is scheduled to be added on Monday, March 26, while vascular surgery advice will be available starting on Monday, April 2. The other 10 specialties covered by the non-urgent tele-advice line are nephrology and podiatric surgery – which were added in February -- chronic pain, endocrinology, gastroenterology, hepatology, neurology, pediatrics, respirology and rheumatology.

Accessing tele-advice from Specialist LINK is simple: Physicians can call 403-910-2551 or toll-free at 1-844-962-5465, from Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., excluding statutory holidays. Chronic pain is available from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Calls are returned within one hour.
