The non-urgent tele-advice line for pediatric COVID-19 questions that is available via specialistlink.ca will be discontinued on Wednesday, June 23 due to a drop in call volume. Family physicians and nurse practitioners who need to speak to a pediatric infectious disease specialist can instead call the Alberta Children’s Hospital switchboard at 403-955-7211 and ask for the on-call specialist.
Meanwhile, pediatric urology tele-advice will be added to specialistlink.ca, also on Wednesday, June 23. Examples of questions physicians may wish to seek advice on include the following:
Management and work-up of febrile urinary tract infections or severe hydronephrosis
Management and work-up of ambiguous genitalia
Concerns about urgent urology issues such as testicular torsion or obstructing ureteric stone
Requesting tele-advice is simple: Visit specialistlink.ca and select the preferred service (in this case, hover over pediatrics before clicking on pediatric urology). Pediatric urology advice can also be requested by calling 403-910-2551 and pressing 3, 4. You can expect to receive a call back within one hour. The service is available Monday to Friday, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. It is closed on statutory holidays. Make the most of your call
To make the most of tele-advice, please leave a direct number or cell phone for your call and limit patient-related questions to one patient per call. Allow an hour for a call-back – please don’t try submitting another request after 30 minutes. If you are working with a resident we recommend that you, as a preceptor, should also be on the call. This is important for billing reasons. Please just alert the consultant and ensure they are aware of this.
